y mom always giggles when she tells her
friends, “My daughter Seri is a seamstress!
Who knows where she gets it?” So where did
I learn this great skill? It began when I took “Sewing 101” as an elective for my 8th grade year. Why were the other gals failing the class when I was sailing by with an ‘A’ with no effort? I guess I was a natural. As the years progressed and I rounded out in personality and hips alike, I found that “making a statement” with my wardrobe was a means by which I could readily express my identity, my uniqueness, and my flair for color. I started making my own clothes. I remember making a two-piece outfit from an old pink floral bedspread. It was truly hideous. But I made it myself and I was proud. I also constructed my own dress for the junior prom; a turquoise taffetta number that made a swish-swish sound with every step and looked really "super" with my white pumps and matching gloves! Who cared that I didn't have a date, I was "styling!"

In college I worked in costume shops for extra credit and learned new skills with each new show. To supplement my acting career in my late twenties, I worked as a stitcher in various professional costume shops and also worked backstage as a dresser or resident wardrobe mistress. While living in upstate NY, I worked at an alteration/tailoring shop and although I didn't make top dollar, my fabric education grew.

From 1999-2006 I worked for Victoria Rosenthal Designs in NYC. I can't even begin to express the amount of knowledge I gleaned from Victoria. She is an excellent teacher, and the seamstressing skills I have now are due to her unending patience for teaching me new techniques and tricks of the trade.

What I sew, really runs the gamut.  What I appreciate most is creating something from nothing. It gives me such a thrill! I also take pride in revamping old clothing or furniture and making something new and hip. If you have any ideas for a crafty fabric activity please keep me in mind! I love new projects and am happy to assist you with unique gift ideas for friends or family.

Since moving to Minneapolis in February of 2006, I have finally been able to expand my seamstress business-something that had been impossible during my traveling gypsy years.  I love to help people with their special fabric needs.  I really like meeting new people-so growing my business allows me to connect with a wonderful bunch of people.  I love to sew!  I also love my acting career.  Feel free to visit www.serijohnson.com
